425 & 427 5th Street | Calumet, MI

425-27 5th Street in Downtown Village of Calumet Historic District are blighted vacant historic sandstone structures, with timber grade lumber interior supports  constructed in 1885. The buildings have sat empty for over 25+ years until such time the Houghton County Landbank (HCLB) acquired the properties through tax foreclosure.

Despite substantial damage to the interiors and the roof on 425 5th, Keweenaw Economic Development Alliance (KEDA) and HCLB have been making great efforts to stabilize the structures (new roof on 427 5th in 2011), through stabilization grants, donations, volunteers, sweat equity and local Village of Calumet involvement

KEDA approached Northern Lights Architecture in early 2023 in order for a design be generated to install a new roof for 425 5th Street in order to protect  the insides from further water damage. The roof project was completed in June 2024.

Northern Lights Architecture in collaboration with Marusich Architecture have now been retained by a prospective developer to provide feasibility cost analysis, preliminary floor plans for 2nd floor residential units, and floor plans for 1st floor commercial.
